Roulette is a casino and gambling game named after the French word meaning "small wheel". In the game a croupier spins a wheel in one direction, then spins a ball in the opposite direction around a tilted circular surface running around the circumference of the wheel. The ball eventually falls onto the wheel and into one of 37 (in European Roulette) or 38 (in American Roulette) colored and numbered pockets on the wheel.
The main pockets are numbered from 1 to 36 alternating between red and black, but the pockets are not in numerical order around the wheel, and there are instances of consecutive numbers being the same color. There is a green pocket numbered 0, and in American Roulette there is also a second green pocket marked 00.
The first form of roulette was devised in 17th century France, by the mathematician Blaise Pascal, who was supposedly inspired by his fascination with perpetual motion devices. The game has been played in its current form since as early as 1796 in Paris. In the 1800s, roulette spread all over both Europe and the U.S., becoming one of the most famous and most popular casino games. Some call roulette the "King of Casino Games", probably because it was associated with the glamour of the casinos in Monte Carlo.
Players can place a variety of 'inside' bets (selecting the number of the pocket the ball will land in, or range of pockets based on their position), and 'outside' bets (including bets on various positional groupings of pockets, pocket colors, or whether it is odd or even). The payout odds for each type of bet is based on its probability.
The object of Roulette is to predict where the ball will stop on the Roulette wheel. A Roulette table has two parts, the wheel and the betting layout (Roulette layout). At the top of the table are two spaces containing 0 and 00. The main section of the table has 36 consecutively numbered rectangular spaces arranged in three columns of twelve spaces each, beginning with 1 at the top and ending with 36 at the bottom.
The rectangles are colored red and black alternately. Below the 36 numbers are three spaces marked 2 to 1. Along the column starting with the number 1 are three more rectangular spaces containing 1st 12, 2nd 12 and 3rd 12. On the outside of these spaces you will see rectangles labeled 1 to 18, Even, a red diamond, a black diamond, Odd and 19 to 36. Each space, alone or combined with other spaces, represents a potential wager. See the table above as an example.
Canoes (38 small compartments) and frets (the partitions) make up the Roulette wheel. The canoes reflect the 38 numbered spaces on the Roulette layout. Canoes consist of alternating pairs of odd and even numbers. Black and red alternate between the canoe spaces as well. The wheel also has two zeros, which are green and placed at opposite ends of the wheel. See the wheel below as an example.
Place your bet: Start the game by placing your wager(s) on the Roulette layout. Choose from five chip denominations: $1, $5, $10, $25 and $100. Make as many different bets and types of bets as you like provided your bets do not exceed the table limit. All bets are in one of two categories: Inside Bets and Outside Bets. The following are possible Roulette wagers divided by their category:
Inside Bets: These are bets located inside the 36 numbered rectangles, 0 and 00 on the Roulette layout. There are six possible inside bets.
Place a bet directly in the center of any individual number, 0 or 00. If the ball stops on your number, you will be paid 35:1.
Place a bet on the dividing line of two numbers and you can wager on two adjacent numbers at one time. If the ball stops on either number, you will be paid 17:1.
Place a bet on the outer right boundary of the betting table, next to a row of three numbers and you can wager on three consecutive numbers at one time. If the ball stops on any of the three numbers, you will be paid 11:1.
Place your bet at the corner of four intersecting numbers to wager on four numbers at one time. If the ball stops on any of the four numbers, you will be paid 8:1.
Place your bet on the outer right boundary line where the 00 and 3 meet and wager on 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3 at the same time. If the ball stops on any of the five numbers, you will be paid 6:1.
Place your bet on the outer right boundary line where the line dividing two rows ends to wager on six numbers at the same time. If the ball stops on any of the six numbers, you will be paid 5:1.
These are bets made outside of the numbered areas. They are at the bottom and the left side of the betting layout. 0 and 00 are losing numbers for any outside bet. There are five possible outside bets.
Place a bet on any of the three boxes marked 2 to 1 to wager on the entire column of twelve numbers above that space. If the ball stops on any of the twelve numbers, you will be paid 2:1.
Place a bet on any of the three boxes marked 1st 12, 2nd 12 or 3rd 12 to wager on the group of twelve numbers directly above that space, 1-12, 13-24 and 25-36 respectively. If the ball stops on a number within the corresponding group, you will be paid 2:1.
Place a bet on the Red or Black diamond to wager on all numbers of that specific color. If the ball stops on any number with your color, you will be paid 1:1.
Place a bet on the Odd or Even rectangles to wager on all corresponding numbers at once. If the ball stops on any of those numbers, you will be paid 1:1.
Place a bet on the 1-18 (low) or 19-36 (high) rectangles to wager on that entire group of numbers. If the ball stops on a number within the range you have selected, you will be paid 1:1.
After you place your bet(s), the Roulette wheel spins with the ball spinning in the opposite direction. The ball will come to a stop in one of the canoes determining the winning number or color. A marker will show the winning number on the table. All winning wagers will be paid and losing wagers cleared.
